Veterans of the Great Patriotic War in the history of the university

On April 3, 2025, the Brest State Technical University solemnly opened the photo project "BrSTU Employees - Veterans of the Patriotic War", dedicated to the heroic feat of the university employees who participated in the Great Patriotic War. The event became an important event in the life of the university in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, emphasizing deep respect for veterans and the memory of those who fought for the freedom of the Motherland.

The exposition of the photo exhibition includes 16 biographies, each of which reveals various aspects of the participation of BrSTU employees in the war. The focus is on stories about the fates of specific people. For example, the story of Boleslav Iosifovich Kameysh, who was an active participant in the partisan movement during the Great Patriotic War, fought in the "Bolshevik" detachment of the Baranovichi unit. After the war, he was involved in party work and taught history. In 1972-1983, he headed the Department of History of the CPSU at BrSTU.

This and other stories help visitors better understand how BrSTU employees contributed to the common victory.

The initiative to create the project belongs to the director of the BrSTU library, Yulia Vyacheslavovna Azarkevich, and employees who decided to pay tribute to the memory of their colleagues who contributed to the victory over fascism.

Samosevich Valery Alekseevich, the author of the publication "We Just Had No Time to Relax with You...", who communicated with veterans and recorded their memories, and Chusovlyankina Svetlana Aleksandrovna, who worked with archival materials and was engaged in filling the site, also participated in the implementation of the project.

The work within the framework of the project includes the creation of a website, which supplements the previously published reference publication “We just had no time to relax with you…” with information from personal files and information from official electronic resources: the generalized database “Memorial”, the document bank “The Feat of the People in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”, the portal “Memory of the People”, the database “Book of Memory” of the Republic of Belarus, the project “Partisans of Belarus”.

“A special feature of the project was that we put the birthplaces of our veterans on Google map and now you can track from which settlements of the former USSR they came to us,” said Yulia Vyacheslavovna. “The true memories of veterans, collected in the materials of the site, give rise to a real connection between generations, form in new generations an awareness of responsibility for the future of their country.”

The opening ceremony was attended by the university administration, teachers and students of BrSTU, as well as a special guest - a minor prisoner of concentration camps Inessa Nikolaevna Kirilyuk. Rector of BrSTU Sergey Antonovich Kasperovich emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and thanked everyone who took part in organizing the exhibition.

"We really understand that memory and the history that we have is a very important resource, a very important basis for moving forward. We would like all our students, employees, guests who will come to us at this time, our veterans to get acquainted with the exhibition and with what we live today, because what exists today is based on what was done earlier, on the feat that was, that our grandfathers, our fathers, great-grandfathers accomplished," said Sergey Antonovich.

Inessa Nikolaevna Kirilyuk told the guests of the ceremony her difficult life story. "Take care of your homeland, love your fatherland, because war is a terrible time. These are destroyed cities, ruins, these are burnt villages, this is poverty, this is hunger, this is cold. It is impossible to allow this in our time!", Inessa Nikolaevna admonished the youth.

Those present honored the memory of the BrSTU veterans and all those who did not live to see this day with a minute of silence.
